US President Trump says he called Xi Jinping the 'king' of China

But srsly ... pretty soon we'll be getting comments from President Trump.

US and Chinese officials are still discussing when the two leaders could sit down to sign off on their trade deal. The current round of talks is scheduled to go through Friday and possibly longer. China wants them lifted. He is meeting with Chinese Vice Premier and lead trade negotiator Liu He from 4.30pm Washington time (2030GMT).

Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin are holding talks in Washington with a Chinese delegation this week after meeting together in Beijing last week.

The Trump administration and American companies want structural IP and market economy issues addressed, with a way to ensure China follows through on its promises, he said. Trump has said he wants a "great deal" with China and has hinted that tariffs could remain in place for some time.

While both sides have praised the potential benefits of a deal, critics have raised concerns that compelling Chinese firms to buy from USA firms could cause these American firms to become dependent on Chinese markets. While some progress is being made, resolving more contentious issues such as the forced transfer of technology is taking longer.

The White House is particularly focused on purchases commitments through the second quarter of 2020, in an effort to narrow the trade balance ahead of Mr Trump's re-election bid.

The president said Mexico must step up on two fronts - it must immediately start blocking illegal immigrants coming from Central America and, over the next year, it must prove it is stopping the flow of drugs crossing the border.

"We're covering issues that have never really been covered before, including enforcement", Kudlow said, listing USA accusations that Beijing engages in intellectual property theft, forced transfer of technology from USA companies doing business in China, cyber hacking, tariffs and non-tariff barriers for commodity trading. "Those issues are critical: Manufacturers in the United States have always been harmed by China's unfair trade practices".

The two sides are still haggling over how to enforce the deal, which Mr Lighthizer has said is the fundamental issue in the talks. A person familiar with the text said China so far agreed only to contemplate not to retaliate if the USA took action against Beijing, but stopped short of a formal pledge to refrain from counter-punches.

Kudlow also said no decisions had been made on tariffs on auto imports coming from top US allies.

The Chamber, the largest and most influential business lobbying group, sees increasing chances that Washington and Beijing will reach a deal to end a nine-month tariff war. There's no timetable for further negotiations after that, the official said.

"He said, "But I am not king, I am president.' I said 'No, you're president for life, and therefore you're king", Trump told his audience, prompting laughter.
