Johnny Manziel signs with AAF, report says

Teams with the worst records in the league will get the chance to pick him up, according to ESPN.

"We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we've always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers", said Head of Football Bill Polian in a statement. He's their second quarterback this season, after the team started with Christian Hackenberg but later benched the former Penn State quarterback.

The AAF allocates players to teams closest to the region in which they played college football, which means that the San Antonio Commanders had the right to add Manziel, who played at Texas A&M.

Former Montreal Alouettes quarterback Johnny Manziel signed with the Alliance of American Football on Saturday night and will join the Memphis Express. Brandon Silvers filled in for Mettenberger after he exited with an ankle injury in the 22-9 loss to the Stallions.

Polian also said he believes Manziel will benefit from "the coaching and mentorship" of Memphis coach Mike Singletary. He entered the spring league's waiver system and was available to the seven other teams.

Standard AAF contracts are for three years and $250,000.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. He was 2-6 as a starter with the Montreal Alouettes last season, completing 106 of 165 passes (64.2 percent) for 1,290 yards with five TDs and seven interceptions. It was his first football action since he was released by the NFL's Cleveland Browns following the 2015 season.

It's unclear when Manziel will make his AAF debut.

Manziel has dealt with several off-field issues.
