South Korea described the breakdown of nuclear talks between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Thursday as unfortunate, but expressed hope that the two countries can continue an active dialogue.

The two sides are expected to sign a joint statement later on Thursday to improve relations and build on their earlier agreement to "work toward the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula".

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which deals with North Korean affairs, couldn't confirm whether it was the first time Kim answered a question from a foreign journalist. Asked on Wednesday whether a formal end to the Korean War might be declared, Mr Trump said: "We'll see".

"So everybody in America and the world should pray for a good outcome".

Facing mounting pressure at home over investigations into Russian meddling in the election, Trump has sought a big win by trying to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for promises of peace and development, a foreign policy goal that has confounded multiple predecessors.

North Korea had offered to "permanently and completely dismantle all the nuclear production facilities" at its main complex in Yongbyon if the U.S. dropped sanctions "that hamper the civilian economy and the livelihood of our people", Ri said.

Later in the afternoon, Kim took more questions. And if everything goes smoothly, there could be a signing of a joint statement, and even a friendly event such as the short private stroll that Kim and Trump took during the Singapore summit.

Kim and Trump sat down again at the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel in Hanoi, where the two leaders had a brief one-on-one chat and a dinner for about two hours Wednesday night. "It has such potential".

Trump added that while reaching a lasting agreement was critical, "speed is not important".

Skeptics say such agreements would leave in place a significant portion of North Korea's nuclear-tipped missiles while robbing the United States of its negotiating leverage going forward.

"Hope you give us more time to talk".

Kim, meanwhile, has emerged with confidence on the world stage over the previous year, repeatedly stepping out diplomatically with South Korean, Chinese and USA leaders.

Trump said Cohen "lied a lot" during Congressional testimony in Washington on Wednesday, though he had told the truth when he said there had been "no collusion" with Russian Federation. There were also huge traffic jams in the already congested streets.

As flags from the three countries fluttered in a chilly drizzle, dozens of cameras flashed and some citizens screamed and used their mobile phones to capture Kim's arrival.

Both Trump and Kim left the venue of their talks, the French-colonial-era Metropole hotel, without attending a planned lunch together, and returned to their hotels.

Trump says that he considers it "a good idea", adding that it should happen "both ways". The two leaders' interpreters were the only others privy to their conversation.

Possible outcomes could include a peace declaration for the Korean War that the North could use to eventually push for the reduction of USA troops in South Korea, or sanctions relief that could allow Pyongyang to pursue lucrative economic projects with the South. The White House identified Kim's translator as Sin Hye Yong.
