HILLSDALE, N.J. -Where were you on February 18?

Multnomah and Marion county public health departments have already started to notify people who might have been exposed of the risk.

"This is a wake up call".

"As a pediatrician, I can't stress enough how critical is to vaccinate children against measles", said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

Watch: Patient zero in B.C. measles outbreak not vaccinated.

The Health Department found the initial case in the outbreak came from a child who caught measles while visiting Israel. It spreads through the air and infects the respiratory tract.

It's possible to be infected with measles even after receiving the vaccination, although it's rare, according to the Mayo Clinic. The vast majority of cases are children under 18 years of age (108 cases), and 13 cases are adults.

"That's why it's so important people travelling overseas make sure they are fully immunised against measles before they go", says Dr McElnay.

The majority of the cases has mainly affected the Orthodox Jewish community in New Square, Spring Valley, and Monsey, health officials said.

That person also visited six locations in Rockland County, N.Y., officials said.

Texas has also witnessed a measles outbreak, with eight confirmed cases of the disease so far this year.

If you are unsure of your family's immunization status, you can view, download and print your family's immunization information online at wa.MyIR.net or request a copy of your immunization record from the Washington State Department of Health.

Amid a significant rise in measles cases across the United States, lawmakers met in a congressional hearing on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to discuss what has been called "a growing public health threat".

Doctors say older measles vaccines weren't as effective as modern ones. "Vaccines, like any medicine, can have side effects".

"I find it unconscionable that there may be physicians who are trying to profit off of parental fears", said Dr. Sophia Jan, who directs pediatrics at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, N.Y. DeGette told the audience that such disruptions were in violation of House rules; Messonnier then said that the vaccine doesn't cause brain swelling or encephalitis in healthy children. The most recent victim was a woman in her 20s, according to the Seattle Times, who had several health conditions and was taking drugs to suppress her immune system.

Measles vaccines became available in 1963.

"The vaccine is extremely effective and extremely safe", he says. "Those who opt out of vaccinating their children are placing vulnerable members of our population, like my son, at great risk for exposure".

This number may soon by trumped in 2019 as NY is now experiencing its worst outbreak in decades and Washington state is fighting one of its own with 66 confirmed cases already for this year, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

The CDC firmly denies widely criticized online speculation that MMR vaccinations may be linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)-a disorder that occurs disproportionately in New Jersey children, at one in 34, the highest rate in the nation-asking, "Is there a link between the MMR shot and autism?" and answering, "No".
