Rescue workers in the German town of Bensheim received an unusual call after a fat rat got stuck in a sewer manhole cover - all of which was captured in a viral video.

With the help of a full team of firefighters, the manhole cover was lifted and propped on wedges while Mr Sehr managed to pop the rotund rat free.

Referring to the rat, Mr Sehr said: "She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip - there was no going forward or back".

In what may have been a sense of optimism that the rat had learned a lesson, its rescuers placed it back inside the sewer hole.

The woman, known only as Juliana, said: "When my husband came home, he thought that the rat was just sitting there at first".

It reportedly took Sehr and the firefighters just three minutes to rescue the rat. "We don't make any difference between animals", spokesman for the group Andreas Steinbach says.

At least eight firefighters encircled the manhole, taking in the animal's pitiful plight.

She also could have a friend in NY (who doesn't) in Pizza Rat.

Despite most rats' extreme flexibility, it's not uncommon for a chubby rat to get stuck in holes.

"Even animals that are hated by many deserve respect", he said.

"Fat Rat is actually my current mood #chunky", reporter Lina de Florias tweeted.

Animal rescuer Michael Sehr, 38, received a picture of the rat drawn by Juliana's two daughters as a thank you.

The rat's rescuers described the rodent as a particularly large specimen that had indulged in a bit too much "winter bacon".
