The Gunners took an early lead after dominating the play, as Ozil was played in free on the left side of the box and dinked a lovely finish over Artur Boruc to make it 1-0.

Somewhat weird first-half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave the Gunners a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium - a result that moved them a point ahead of Manchester United in the race for Champions League football next season.

The pair scored to put Arsenal on course for the win before Lys Mousset pulled one back - only for Laurent Koscielny, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to strike after the interval.

The timing of the opening goal, scored inside four minutes by Mesut Ozil, particularly irked Howe after he had called his side "exciting" pre-game, and he said: "They were too good for us, it was a hard night".

"We created opportunities, and it was a unusual game in that respect".

Asked later at a post-match news conference if he regretted the fact Arsenal did not score more to boost their goal difference, Emery said: "We created chances".

"Today, Chelsea are not playing [in the league], they are playing in the final and we are in the position at the moment and continue with the same idea".

Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a wonderful game vs Southampton and the Armenian will retain his place in the first XI along with Aaron Ramsey who will play in attacking midfielder.

Ozil starred on his return to the team while Mkhitaryan is enjoying a strong run of form. I am now also very proud of our players.

Emery refused to get carried away by Arsenal being back in the top four as he turned his attentions to the next Premier League match.

'We need the players in the first XI and on the bench, and we need a big commitment from every player to help us.

But, with Arsenal looking risky going forward, the last thing the Cherries needed was to give their hosts a helping hand.
