The two companies have also taken a different approach to the critical hinge design on their respective foldables.

When folded, the device is a huge display smartphone with a 6.6-inch screen, and when opened, it turns into a slim tablet with an 8-inch screen.

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold, nearly everyone was really surprised by the phone. The Verge notes that unlike Samsung's Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X has no gap in the middle of the bendable screen.

Huawei and Samsung are trying to convince people they've figured foldable phones out.

Additionally, the Mate X also has a 4,500mAh battery and 55W fast charging Huawei claims can provide owners with an 85 percent charge in 30minutes.

Forward-looking: Huawei is making a splash at this year's MWC by debuting its own foldable phone that the company says is 5G ready.

The hardware was shown to look rather reminiscent of the Huawei Mate X thanks to its similar folding style.

The Mate X is packing two screens. According to Shen, the folded screen "does not bring about a huge improvement in user experience". The Fold X, for comparison, places the screen on the inside, with a secondary screen on the outside for use when the device is shut.

The Mate X drops down to 8GB of RAM in contrast to Samsung's 12GB, while maintaining the 512GB of storage and its proprietary Nano memory card expansion slot. "For sure Huawei will make more inroads to Apple business in China with the new foldable mobile", he added.

Some market analysts pointed out, however, technical superiority does not always lead to success in the market as curved-screen smartphones, like Samsung's Galaxy Round and LG Electronics G Flex, proved.

Why? Because while Samsung's technology has certainly wowed the smartphone industry it doesn't come cheap, costing over £1,500.

Huawei's foldable smartphone officially measures at 11 millimeters in thickness when folded outward, meaning the display has a curvature of at least 11 millimeters to fold out.

Most technology giants came up with the smartphone-meets-tablet configuration with the flexible displays, however, Nubia has distinguished itself by launching a folding wearable that packs nearly all of the functionalities of a smartphone.

It should be noted than neither the Mate X nor the Galaxy Fold have been made accessible to the press to actually touch, use and get a feeling of the phones.

Widely considered as one of this year's best attractions at MWC19, Mate X is likely to be available in mid-2019 with 2,299 euro price tag.
