Jan Vertonghen: Spurs are no longer underdogs after Dortmund demolition

Fernando Llorente turned down an offer to leave Tottenham during the January transfer window and says he wants to remain in North London beyond the end of the season.

With a major helping hand from the increasingly influential Son, Mauricio Pochettino's side are in the thick of the Premier League title race and on course for the Champions League quarter-finals.

Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in their Champions League last-16 first-leg clash at Wembley.

"Unfortunately, we just weren't locked in on their crosses and they were able to score off three crosses, and we've got to work on that".

In the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, the focus has fallen on Son and he has not shirked the responsibility, with his 47th-minute strike against Dortmund setting them on their way to an impressive victory on Wednesday. "That's why we need to be careful", Son said.

A late goal from substitute Marco Asensio helped Real Madrid narrowly defeat a determined and young Ajax squad on Wednesday night, as Los Blancos prevailed 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 match-up at the Amsterdam Arena.

Belgian Vertonghen notched his first goal in the Champions League with a well-timed volley in the 83rd minute after he had set up forward Son for a 47th minute lead. Aside from one unsafe shot from Lucas Moura, Tottenham really didn't create too much in the first half.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino said that he showed his players video clips at half-time to remind them of the game plan, and his team talk quickly produced results as Son scored the crucial opener in the 47th minute.

"It had been a while since I'd come off the bench to score, so it was satisfying, and all the more so that it was Champions League".

Son was fantastic again, he's doing fantastic.

He cost Spurs just £8million (Daily Mail) and he already looks good enough to play an important role on a regular basis.

"His smile, he translates good energy and his performance every game is improving". A point in Frankfurt is okay and drawing 3-3 after leading 3-0 is also part of the game.

"I am very happy for him, he deserved it".
