Katy Perry ‘Blackface’ Shoes Pulled From Stores

Katy's recent shoe offering that was available at Walmart and Dillard's has since been pulled off the shelves since one particular design resembles Blackface.

Both the Katy Perry Collections' Rue Face slip-on loafer and the Ora Face block-heel sandal - which came in black, gold and beige and sold for $129 each - have since been pulled from the label's website.

In 2016, high-end winter sports brand Moncler released a series of designs featuring a black face with prominent red lips.

Perry is the latest in a string of fashion designers who have been attacked for manufacturing apparel, footwear or accessories that many consumers say is reminiscent of "blackface". Perry debuted her line of whimsical shoes in 2017.

Perry's shoe line, which was available at stores like Dillard's and Walmart, has faced accusations of showing depictions of blackface. However, the black style has critics pointing out the resemblance to classic blackface makeup.

"Our intention was never to inflict any pain", she said in a joint statement with Global Brands Group. "We have immediately removed them from Katy Perry Collections".

"Another one to add to your blackface file", one person said on Twitter. The sandal version of the shoe looks similar.

The shoes had been derided on social media, with singer Masika Kalysha reportedly posting a photo of the shoes on Instagram over the weekend, asking, "We just gonna let Katy Perry slide?"

Last week, Gucci pulled a jumper from sale after it was accused of resembling blackface.

Gucci has since released an apology in an official statement circulated on Twitter.
