Will Smith Makes His Debut As Genie In New 'Aladdin' Trailer

Will Smith is pictured in the new sneak peek painted entirely blue, with a shaved head, goatee and gold jewellery. Granted, we don't see Will Smith's genie do half the bonkers stuff Robin Williams' animated version did in this trailer, but Disney seems to be on the right track with the character so far.

But the proceedings took a hard turn in the wrong direction at the end when the genie was finally revealed: basically just Smith's blue face atop his dad bod as if the film's special effects budget ran out and they chose to call it a day.

In addition to Massoud and Smith, Aladdin will star Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar. "It's so spectacular, it's such a handsome movie and I can't wait for people to see it". It is, so it comes as no surprise that Disney is readying another live-action redo: Aladdin, the 1992 classic about a boy, his money, his carpet, and a genie who loves pop culture references.

"The more I see of this Aladdin Remake, the more I wish I didn't see of it.Disney really needs to stop with this", wrote one Twitter user.

"Will Smith as #Aladdin's genie makes me want to uninvent CGI". Also, he's just gonna use his regular Will Smith voice? The publicity photo above looks a little more polished.

Smith himself, however, appeared to be into his final form in Aladdin. In the actual trailer you can watch above as well, the finished effect looks kind of, well, unfinished.

What are your thoughts on Will Smith's new look as the Genie? "Y'all need to trust me more often!"

People compared the Genie to SpongeBob characters, Kylo Ren, and even Paul Giamatti's character in Liar Liar.

Aladdin heads to theaters May 24, 2019, and you can check out the new trailer below.
