Marlins Trade J.T. Realmuto To Phillies After Offseason Full Of Rumors

J.T. Realmuto's agent, Jeff Berry, predicted last November that the All-Star catcher wouldn't still be employed by the Miami Marlins when 2019 Spring Training began. All reports indicate the trade will include top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez. In 260 career Marlins home games, Realmuto slashed just.245/.294/.384 with 55 doubles, four triples, 22 home runs, 106 RBI and 60 walks.

There were several teams in the mix for Realmuto, and the Marlins waited for a package they were happy with before pulling the trigger on a trade. Miami, under the new ownership of Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman, created a firestorm of controversy by trading Dee Gordon, Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich last offseason. He would check in periodically and said the talks with Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill didn't "heat up" until Sunday. "But our goal is to build a long-term sustainable championship organization".

The Phillies are hoping this move leads to a bigger offseason move: the signing of Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. They bolstered their lineup earlier with the additions of shortstop Jean Segura and 2013 NL MVP Andrew McCutchen. All four National League East teams showed interest in Realmuto at some point over the a year ago. They gave up, arguably, the best catcher in baseball but they are acquiring exacting what a team rebuilding needs to be acquiring: A future ACE!

With Realmuto no longer available, the Dodgers seem poised to go into Spring Training with Russell Martin and Austin Barnes as their primary catchers. He hit.262 with 10 homers in his first full major league season past year.

"In Sanchez, we saw a front-of-the-rotation starter". After Realmuto notched the go-ahead single in a Marlins victory over the Nationals last season, Harper declared, "If we had that guy, we would have won".

He also started 111 games behind the plate and earned his first All-Star nod.

"He will have a really big impact on our group", Klentak told reporters.

"We have heard outstanding things about J.T. and his work ethic and his makeup and his leadership and the type of teammate he is", Klentak said.

Having already settled with the Marlins, Realmuto is set to make $5.9 million in 2019. The team added both Neil Walker and Curtis Granderson recently in low cost/high reward deals that could pan out and help this team win more than 63 games as it did a year ago. They haven't had a winning season since 2009 and haven't been to the playoffs since winning the World Series in 2003.
