No one was hurt in the Monday crash north of Salt Lake City.

Police in Utah say a teen participating in the latest viral challenge caused a crash. Ironically, the teen very almost committed suicide herself trying to copy the film, and one of the film's characters does commit suicide by driving (un-blindfolded) into oncoming traffic.

The crash happened around 5 p.m. on Monday, January 7, on Layton Parkway in Layton, Utah when an unidentified 17 year old female crashed her pickup truck into a vehicle and then a light pole.

The "Bird Box Challenge" takes its name from a recent Netflix movie "Bird Box", in which the characters must remain blindfolded. They reportedly called out the Bird Box Challenge specifically.

The challenge has seen people being filmed doing a variety of every day things blindfolded, including walking into walls and down streets. The 17-year-old, her 16-year-old passenger and the occupants of the SUV were "luckily" not injured.

Police only began suspecting the Bird Box challenge after the driver she hit investigated the crash further and asked locals for any possible surveillance footage and shared his findings with officers, Lieutenant Lyman said.

When the movie first came out, Netflix gave a clear warning to viewers to not try the risky challenge. The disingenuous tweet - Netflix claimed not to know how the "challenge" had started, despite seeding the hashtag #BirdBoxChallenge weeks before releasing the film - sparked predictable eye-rolling among the thankfully large segment of the population that realizes films aren't real, even if you watch them at home.

However, police have requested that the driver be charged with reckless driving, Lt Lyman said.
