Russia's FSB Detains US Citizen in Moscow During Spy Action

Officials who work for Russia's domestic security agency reported late Friday, on Russian run state media, that they have arrested a US citizen on espionage charges.

Its statement identified the person in Russian, with the AFP news agency saying the name appeared to translate as Paul Whelan.

FSB opened a criminal case under the article pertaining to espionage.

The arrest came with Moscow embroiled in a number of spy scandals with the West.

There was no immediate comment from the White House or U.S. State Department.

The FSB so far has provided no other details. Russian agents are suspected of poisoning former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in England.

The agency said the American was detained "while carrying out an act of espionage".

Tensions between Moscow and Washington have intensified since Russian Federation annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

"On December 28, 2018, agents of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation in Moscow arrested the US citizen Paul Whelan in the course of committing spy activity", Interfax's message reads.
