The New York Police Department said a transformer exploded at the utility company's facility in Astoria shortly after 9 p.m., CBS New York reports.

The fire was put out quickly and according to authorities there are no reported injuries.

One commenter said: "Can someone explain why the sky in Brooklyn was lightning top bright blue?" As we were watching it, it was like somebody turned off the power and it just went dark and then it was quiet.

The freaky sight set off a frenzy on social media, where people reported a power failure at LaGuardia Airport.

Video posted on social media shows the sky glowing a light blue color as an explosion could be seen off in the distance.

Many posted videos and photos of the night sky illuminated by a bright light. The blast had caused the lights in his home to flicker off and on, he said. The ground stop lasted about 45 minutes. NY police said the fire was under control as of 9:40 p.m. and no injuries were reported.

Another one added: "Something exploded in NY making the sky look attractive". The power supplier said it is evaluating power outages in surrounding areas and investigating the cause of the fire.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a message on Twitter no one was injured and that Con Edison was evaluating the extent of power outages in the area.

Power was restored to the airport within an hour of the explosion, however some flights were rerouted from LaGuardia.
