Iraq Officially Declares Christmas Day A National Holiday

A young girl dressed in a Santa outfit takes part in a Christmas day mass held for internally displaced people from Christian towns of Bartella and Qaraqosh at a church in Erbil on December 25, 2016 in Mosul, Iraq.

He encouraged all to remain fruitful to the course of Jesus Christ during the Yuletide and not to indulge in any negative behavior that would create problems for society.

"Christmas is a time to reflect on the humility espoused by Jesus Christ, and the fact that he came to earth in a human body and died on the cross manifests his humility". "For me, Jesus Christ was the embodiment of love and forgiveness".

He said the Jews in the Bible did not believe in Jesus Christ but had their faith in the law, which they thought could set them free. The Christmas messages were disseminated at these services.

He prayed for journey mercies for as many Nigerians that would have to travel during the period and urged the police and other security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities and ensure that the lives and property of Nigerians are fully secured at all times.

Families and friends exchanged Christmas gifts among one another. "It is special season on that is filled with the spirit of friendship and fellowship", he noted. He wanted people to celebrate Christmas amidst happiness and bliss.

Dozens of worshippers prayed and received communion, and then gathered around the traditional bonfire in the church's courtyard.

He said that Christmas offered Christians an opportunity to reciprocate Jesus' incredible act of love, by dedicating themselves to things that promote good virtues, peace, harmony and progress.

"However, we received a kind of Christianity that confined God to the Church house, so to worship God, you have to go to church", he said.

Iraqi Christians quietly celebrated Christmas on Tuesday amid improved security, more than a year after the country declared victory over Islamic State militants who threatened to end their 2,000-year history in Iraq. He urged everyone to reciprocate God's love for us by loving each other and loving Nigeria.
