Nintendo re-iterates that it's the "overall top-selling United States software publisher so far for 2018" according to NPD data, which will be further boosted by holiday sales and by Smash Ultimate's tail.

Ultimate has brought the fight to 3 million United States players in the 11 days since its release and become Nintendo Switch's fastest-selling game.

With 74 playable fighters, over 100 stages, more than 800 music tracks and much more, Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo has sold 8.7 million Switch consoles since its launch 21 months ago, making it the fastest-selling video game systems in the USA during that time, according to data from the NPD Group.

The NPD Group on Tuesday also revealed that the Switch has become the fastest-selling console of this hardware generation.

In addition to the above announcements, Nintendo also said its yearly hardware sales are at their highest since 2011. "We're looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond".

Further to this, Nintendo has announced that five out of the ten best selling Nintendo home console releases have released on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo said that since the system's launch in March 2017 to November 2018, Nintendo sold more than 8.7 million units.

Nintendo's eShop sales have also seen a huge bump this year. And, Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 4.7 million units. Along with strong sales at retail, Super Smash Bros. Total sales over the game's first three days were nearly 30 percent higher than for Mario Kart Wii, which ended up shipping more than 37 million copies worldwide.

Since the Switch launched three years later than its two rivals it'll never catch up, and so direct comparisons between overall sales are essentially meaningless.
