The top trending search query overall in the United Kingdom was the World Cup, in a year in which many England fans hoped the trophy would finally come home.

Staying with sport, November's rugby match between Ireland and New Zealand also gripped the nation, coming in at number seven. It has been found that football pipped cricket in the overall search listing in the country - with questions around FIFA surpassed the queries around the IPL events. Meghan Markle was also the most searched for person of the year internationally, followed closely by Demi Lovato. "We also searched for how to be a good citizen, how to be a good friend, and how to be a good dancer".

Under the "near me" category, people searched the most for "mobile stores near me". Following up Avicii was none other than Mac Miller, Stan Lee, and Black Panther.

On a lighter note, the ever-popular Marvel movies also topped the search charts. The movie Black Panther rounded out the global top five. Recently-deceased public figures take up more than half of the list of top-searched terms.

Top "near me" searches: Jobs near me, Nandos near me, Dischem near me, McDonalds near me, Guesthouse near me, Postnet near me, Steers near me, Spar near me, Debonairs near me, Spur near me. Quite the difference from 2017's top how to question, which was How to make slime.

Yes, even we were taken aback when Google revealed the "Year in Search 2018" list.
