The elder Bush died on Friday at his home in Houston.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will also attend the funeral, an aide to Biden confirms. Four former presidents and President Donald Trump will be attending his funeral at the National Cathedral.

Sully will accompany Bush's casket on the Monday flight from Houston to Maryland, CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the plans.

Spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted Monday that Bush "will be carried to his final rest" wearing gray socks saluting the Armed Forces and paying "tribute to his lifetime of service", starting as an 18-year-old "naval aviator in war".

Bush served two terms as vice president under fellow Republican President Ronald Reagan before his own stint in the Oval Office from 1989 to 1993, a time that saw the end of the Cold War as well as the United States' routing of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's army in the 1991 Gulf War.

With hands on hearts, members of Bush's cabinet, lawmakers and Supreme Court justices honoured the 41st president as his flag-draped casket entered the Capitol Rotunda.

The casket will then be transported to the cathedral for the funeral service - the fourth there of a former president.

"He was just a high-quality man who truly loved his family", Trump said Saturday while in Argentina. Former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney told Politico he will deliver one of several eulogies at the service, at Bush's request.

Following the funeral in Washington, Bush's casket will be returned to Houston, where a private service is scheduled for Thursday.

In June this year, when Sully became part of the Bush family, the former USA president's spokesperson had jokingly said, "As one person said, he [Sully] can do just about anything except make you a martini, but not to worry, he can go get you someone to make you a martini!" Bush will be buried next to his wife Barbara, who died in April, and their daughter Robin, who died of leukemia at the age of three. As a true patriot and a visionary, President Bush will forever be viewed by people with disabilities and their families as a hero through his efforts to enact the Americans with Disabilities Act. The two men struck up a close friendship.

Carter replaced Bush with Stansfield Turner.

Trump will pay a condolence call to the Bush family on Tuesday at Blair House, according to the sources, a government house across the street from the White House.

The touching image of the dog staying by the former U.S. leader's side has been widely shared, with the president's son Jeb tweeting "Sully has the watch". After each time "he would bounce back", Baker said on ABC.

Still, when an aide told Bush his friend was visiting that day, "he perked up". And he walks down and I said, 'Mr.

"I love you, too", his father responded, in his last words.
