And with Tuesday's formal news that the league was expanding, again, but this time to Seattle, a second Quebec team and eighth in Canada will remain very much a fantasy. The Seattle team will play in the Seattle Center Arena, formerly the KeyArena.

The NHL is coming to Seattle.

The fact that an ownership group headed by David Bonderman and Hollywood film producer Jerry Bruckheimer paid $150 million more in expansion fees than what Vegas paid two years ago also didn't hurt. Groundbreaking on a total overhaul of KeyArena is Wednesday, and Seattle's front office will spend the rest of this season plotting the course for an organization that has a tough act to follow after the Vegas Golden Knights reached the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season.

"Our game is more exciting, entertaining and competitive than ever, and the pool of talented players is deeper and wider than ever", Bettman said in a statement. Add Anaheim and now Seattle and that number has grown to five.

"Today is a dream come true for an entire city", Leiweke said after Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement in the resort's ballroom. "But I did a pretty close study on (Vegas) and they did a heck of a job, you've got to give them credit and there's certainly things we can learn from that", he said.

"They've always felt that we should have a little more time to build the arena right", Bruckheimer said. "Personally, I think it's a great market".

Flyers goaltending prospect Carter Hart played for the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, located 25 miles north of Seattle.

The Board of Governors also approved a realignment plan that will shift the Coyotes from the Pacific Division to the Central, joining the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets, giving the National Hockey League four divisions with eight teams each; the Central now currently has seven teams.

"It was at the end of the day the simplest, most logical and least disruptive option we had available to us and I think it'll work well for the Coyotes", Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said.

The biggest concern for Coyotes fans will be the relative strength of the Central compared to the current Pacific Division. "We thought it made the most sense when we looked at all the other conceivable possibilities".

"It gives you an excitement that you can have a team that's not your expansion teams of the past with the National Hockey League rules", Tippett said.

Seattle will draft one player from every team's roster except for Las Vegas.

Back in 1917, the Seattle Metropolitans defeated the Montreal Canadiens to bring the Stanley Cup south of the 49th parallel for the first time. In 1917, the Seattle Metropolitans of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association became the first American team to win the Stanley Cup (back then, the victor of the PCHA played the victor of the NHL for the cup).
