Former President of the United States George H.W Bush.

We're taking a look back on the life and career of former President George H.W. Bush.

Bush married Barbara Pierce in January 1945, shortly before the war ended, and the couple went on to have six children, including one, Robin, who died as a child.

His pronouncement soon proved prophetic, with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union occurring early in his presidency.

"While President Bush has recovered from pneumonia, he continues to deal with the effects of chronic bronchitis, which is a condition more prevalent with age", Doerr said at the time, according to ABC News.

In February 2011, then President Barack Obama awarded Bush the highest USA civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom.

"President @GeorgeHWBush was very pleased to receive President @BarackObama this afternoon during his visit to #Houston. While our hearts are heavy today, they are also filled with gratitude".

He was a World War II aviator and Texan oil tycoon before entering politics in 1964 as a Republican.

Bush was the patriarch of a political dynasty that included one son who served as president, another as a governor and a grandson who now holds statewide office in Texas.

The former president had been hospitalized in the recent past for respiratory conditions, including a mild case of pneumonia in April 2017.

Before getting the keys to the White House, he served eight years as the vice president of Republican icon Ronald Reagan.

Bush, the 41st president of the United States, lived longer than any of his predecessors.

He had to ditch one plane in the Pacific and was shot down on September 2, 1944, while completing a bombing run against a Japanese radio tower.
