The family confirmed in a statement to People Magazine that Vernita Lee died at her home in Milwaukee on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 83. The longtime housekeeper died in her home in Wisconsin on Thursday, November 22. The funeral has already taken place and was strictly private, according to a family spokesperson. No other details were provided.

Oprah's mother was a teenager when she gave birth to her, and the philanthropist and TV star was raised by Vernita's mother, her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee in Mississippi.

"She was 83 years old".

During a 2013 episode of Oprah's Lifeclass, the 64-year-old, who has no children of her own, opened up about the biggest lesson she learned from her relationship with her mother. She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey, and by a daughter, Patricia.

'Memorial donations in Vernita's name may be made to Feeding America (feedingamerica.org)'.

The relationship between Oprah and her mom was a tumultuous one but was eventually repaired.

"I walked into that space feeling completely alone and abandoned".

Winfrey hasn't commented herself on social media about the loss, but did give fans a look inside her holiday festivities last week. "I don't remember ever shedding a tear about it because I knew that God was my father, Jesus was my brother, and they were with me".

She added: "I lost my lovely grandma on Thanksgiving".

Oprah's niece made the announcement on Facebook, writing, "I lost my handsome grandma on Thanksgiving".

Vernita is survived by her daughters Oprah and Patricia, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. "To my mother, I say, 'You can let this shame go'".
