Omar's district has become increasingly foreign-born with now nearly 15 percent of the region being born outside of the U.S. As MPR News notes, more than 35 percent of the district is nonwhite and there are 22,000 more foreign-born residents living in the district since Rep. Keith Ellison - the first Muslim elected to Congress - was first elected in 2008.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezis is the youngest woman elected to Congress. Most were considered long shots. Democrats won the national election (despite important setbacks in the US Senate) because of women candidates and women voters.

Delmore said that many of these candidates adopted a new approach when campaigning for their various positions.

For the first time, a pair of Native American congresswomen are headed to the House, in addition to two Muslim congresswoman. As of Wednesday, at least 100 won their House races, easily beating the old record of 84. Women are also more likely to identify as Democrats or lean Democratic, according to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey. And the vast majority of them ran as Democrats helping to give the Democratic Party control of the House.
