Democrat Gillum concedes in close Florida governor's race

Ron DeSantis, a Republican from Ponte Vedra Beach, defeated Andrew Gillum, the Democratic mayor of Tallahassee.

Meanwhile, two U.S. House of Representatives races had been settled by 10 p.m. That changed in the final week, when Trump helped drive out Republican supporters.

But Republican Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in OH, one of the highest-profile governor's races, according to an NBC News projection.

DeSantis' win represents an extension of a decade of trifecta Republican control of the swing state and a resounding win for Trump, who aggressively inserted himself into the race.

And he also refused to focus just on Democratic-rich counties in the southeast corner of the state.

With a razor-thin margin separating Senate candidates Rick Scott and Bill Nelson, Broward County - a Democratic bastion - was still counting votes Wednesday, with no idea how many are left.

DeSantis also pledged to address the state's toxic blue-green algae crisis and aggressively pursue Everglades restoration and repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike around Lake Okeechobee.

With more than 80 percent of the vote counted, DeSantis held a lead of 1 percent. "I mean that's a lot of work", DeSantis said. "They're now using full bullhorns".

As governor, DeSantis will essentially be Trump lite. When DeSantis was asked about the Horowitz conferences during an October debate, his angry reaction created one of the campaign's viral moments. I get my bank statements sent there. I am not going to bow down to the altar of political correctness.

"I think you're going to get exhausted of me calling you, asking you for things for Florida", DeSantis said about Trump.

"This was from the beginning an extremely hard task", Gillum said. "And it hollered through this room". The corruption allegation stemmed from a continuing FBI investigation into City Hall that Gillum has said he is not a target of and is cooperating with; the charge that Tallahassee had the state's highest crime rate was false. DeSantis also secured the endorsement of the Florida Realtors following the August 28 primary.

In Gillum's concession speech, he spoke about calling DeSantis and congratulating him on the win.

King, who ran in the primary against Gillum, Gwen Graham, Philip Levine and Greene, is CEO of Elevation Financial Group, a Winter Park-based company that builds affordable housing.

With a crowd of supporters cheering him on, Andrew Gillum cast his ballot for governor of Florida this morning at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Tallahassee, FL.

Gillum talked about how he tried to keep his campaign positive despite attacks from former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis and President Donald Trump. Endorsed by socialist Bernie Sanders, Gillum wants to raise the Florida corporate tax rate and minimum wage, and he has made exorbitant promises to raise teacher salaries and expand Medicaid in Florida.
