He struggled to find his best tennis during the week, but Roger Federer did what champions do in his home country at Basel, Switzerland, raising the title for the ninth time after a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over surprise finalist and qualifier Marius Copil.

Only Connors (109) has won more titles than Federer, however, at 37 years old, the world No 3 does not think he has the time remaining to become the most decorated player of the professional era. He kept his foot on the pedal in the second, racing to a comfortable 4-0 lead but had to fight to emerge the victor.

But a run of five consecutive games for Federer maintained the world number three's spectacular run in this competition.

Wimbledon runner-up and world No 8 Anderson is having a career-best season and won his fourth career title.

Roger was magnificent behind his first serve, winning 32 out of 34 points and saving three out of five break points, creating the same number of chances on the other side and converting three to wrap up the win in straight sets and made his crowd erupting in joy.

In the third, Copil kept pace, with Zverev faltering on serve in the 10th game and his opponent taking advantage with a cross-court volley victor to advance amid cheers for the underdog.

Second seed Alexander Zverev also went through with a 7-5 6-3 win over Roberto Bautista Agut, his 52nd win of the year.

"I knew this would be a tough match", Copil said.

"You've got to win the hard way, but I'm not complaining".

But the margin lasted for only two games as the Swiss dropped serve for the fourth time to trail 4-5 as Simon struck a down-the-line victor.

The top seed grabbed a second break, with the Swiss serving out victory a game later on his first match point. But he finally lost his nerve in the 12th game when two unforced errors in a row handed Federer the match.

Nishikori dominated on serve as he beat Kukushkin for the eighth time in eight meetings.
