China-Japan relations have undergone turbulence but are now "back to a normal track", Xi told Abe during the first formal visit to Beijing by a Japanese leader in almost seven years.

The Trump administration's unconventional foreign policy toward trade and military alliances has left Tokyo feeling unsure of the USA support which has underlined its worldwide relations since the end of World War II.

While anxious about China's growing naval power, Japan is also keen for closer economic ties with its biggest trading partner, but it must manage that rapprochement without upsetting its key security ally, the United States.

"How we dovetail this and how we leverage Japan's strength in certain areas including medical equipment, hospitals and others is something that the two leaders can explore", Gokhale said. The neighbors also agreed to discuss establishing a clearing bank for offshore yuan and cooperation between Japan's Financial Services Agency and the China Securities Regulatory Commission.

As a symbol of friendship, they also agreed to move forward on talks about China loaning another giant panda to a Japanese zoo, a Japanese government official said.

For years, Tokyo and Beijing have been mired in a territorial row over the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the high-speed rail project was held during Abe's visit to India in September past year for the annual bilateral summit.

Both nations responded by increasing their military deployment in the disputed waters.

The controversy sparked anti-Japanese riots in China and kicked off a frosty spell between the two sides that has only recently begun to thaw.

But growing uncertainty in the two countries' respective ties with the USA have pushed the traditional rivals closer.

The warming in relations is being driven by uncertainty emanating out of President Donald Trump's unpredictable policies towards allies and its increasingly hawkish policies on China.

It was unclear, what specific rights issues Abe raised.

During Mr Abe's visit, the leaders will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of a treaty between the two countries that was meant to set the tone for their relations following the war.

The North Korean conflict remains a contentious issue between China and Japan.

"The timing is very important", said Yasuhiro Matsuda, a professor at the University of Tokyo's Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia. Now 64, he has been prime minister since December 2012 and is determined to remain Japan's leader for three more years.
