"I get it. You wanted an Indian woman, but Elizabeth Warren failed her DNA test", said Haley, whose parents both emigrated from India.

"He said if I get stuck for laughs, just brag about his accomplishments", Ms Haley said.

She poked fun at herself, her Indian roots and her boss, President Donald Trump, at a NY annual dinner on Thursday, at which chief guests are expected to skewer themselves and others.

The Al Smith Dinner, a white-tie gala featuring prominent politicians, was one of Haley's first appearances since announcing her resignation in an Oval Office meeting with the president October 9.

'Actually, when the president found out I was Indian American, he asked me if I was from the same tribe as Elizabeth Warren, ' said Haley. "I saw him on LinkedIn looking for a job".

"It really killed at the United Nations, I've got to tell you", she continued, and added, with a chuckle, "There has been some debate whether the United Nations laughed with the president or at the president".

On a serious note, Haley delivered a sharp rebuke of Trump's divisive politics, saying opponents are not evil.

Haley also poked fun at Mayor de Blasio and NY liberals.

Two years ago, Trump - then the Republican presidential nominee and Democratic rival Clinton traded caustic barbs at the charity event meant to raise money for impoverished children.

"But I do understand why you invited me", Haley said.

"Actually the president called me this morning and gave me some really good advice", she went on to say. Not only did the test results not back up her claims, but the results made her a laughingstock.

"Oh, look I got the mayor's drink by mistake", she said.

Haley turned to de Blasio, who was seated near his fellow Democrat Andrew Cuomo, the governor of NY, and reminded him that she has "diplomatic immunity" as a member of the United Nations delegation. In South Sudan, where rape is routinely used as a weapon of war, that is evil. "These are really evil people", he said of Kavanaugh opponents at a rally in MS recently.

Thursday night's speech was the first major public appearance Haley has made since she announced last week her intention to resign from her post at the end of the year. "They're just our opponents".
