Buyer of Banksy painting that self-destructed wants sale to go through

Banksy, aka the mysterious United Kingdom street artist, is back at it again!

In a video, a person purported to be the anonymous graffiti artist is shown installing a shredder inside the gilded frame "in case it was ever put up for auction".

The auction house said the artwork had been granted a certificate by Banksy's authentication body and has given a new title, "Love is in the Bin".

A version of his iconic work "Girl With Balloon" hit the block at Sotheby's in London on Saturday (October 5), offered with an estimate of £200,000 - £300,000.

"Following his surprise intervention on the night, we are pleased to confirm the sale of the artist's newly-titled Love Is In The Bin, the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction".

Right after the piece was sold, the work of art self-destructed. The video is captioned with a quote by the Spanish artist Picasso, who had said the urge to destroy was also a creative urge. The buyer is a female collector from Europe, the auction house said.

"A few years ago I secretly built a shredder into a painting", text on the screen in the short clip explains.

This leaves unanswered questions as people do not believe that a painting will stay that long with a shredder in it with nothing going wrong with the mechanism of the shredder after such a long time. No sooner did the gavel come down to mark the sale of Banksy's "Girl With Balloon" for a record $1.4 million, did the picture start to slip out of its frame into shreds below.

Banksy is known worldwide for his England-based street art.

"A man dressed in black sporting sunglasses and a hat was seen scuffling with security guards near the entrance to Sotheby's shortly after the incident", Art Newspaper also reported.

John Brandler, director of Brandler Art Galleries, told the BBC that Banksy is "the ultimate publicity artist", calling the stunt "absolutely brilliant".
