MINGORA: PML-N activists here took out a protest rally here against the arrest of party president Shahbaz Sharif and called it a conspiracy against their party.

Pakistani authorities arrested on Friday opposition leader and younger brother of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif in connection with alleged corruption in a social housing scheme, the country's anti-graft agency said.

Former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif will preside over the meeting, which will be his first political activity after the death of his spouse Kulsoom Nawaz (Sept 11) and his release along with his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar from the Adiala jail on Sept 19 when a two-judge bench of the Islamabad High Court suspended their sentences in the Avenfield reference.

Since then, Mr Sharif stayed away from media and political activities and the party leaders defended him by claiming that presently he was in a state of mourning over the death of his wife and that he would soon start his political activities.

Earlier, Hamza Shehbaz and Salman Shehbaz briefed Nawaz Sharif at his Jati Umra residence about the case against their father.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) said that Sharif, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, was detained for his alleged misappropriations in Ashiana Housing Scheme in Lahore during his tenure as the Punjab province Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018, Geo News reported.

The body is expected to seek Sharif's remand when he is produced before the accountability court.

Shahbaz was apprehended during his appearance before NAB in Saaf Pani Company scam. "Shahbaz Sharif being the chief minister had set great examples of transparency and honesty in all projects". "Such actions will no more be tolerated". The PML-N has condemned the arrest of Shahbaz and termed it a "political victimisation".

Sources went on to say, Shehbaz Sharif was arrested following conversation with Fawad Hassan Fawad.

The PML-N huddle will also focused on what the party refers to as "politics of revenge".

Only last week, the two parties had announced their decision to field joint candidates in the Oct 14 by-elections.
