It was the first lady's second stop on a four-nation tour of the African continent. Lawmakers essentially ignored those requests.

"I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that [the] United States is providing the children, and thank you for everything you've done", Trump said.

She had just finished touring several outdoor classrooms. Just 77 teachers educate more than 8,500 students who attend the school.

"Meeting those children and understanding their different way of life is why I wanted to travel here".

The Be Best campaign, which addresses the social well-being of children, was rolled out this year.

The US first lady also went on a quick safari. The high-pitched sounds of women vocalizing were heard at the airport and at her subsequent appearances.

The event was to "highlight friendly US-Malawi relations" and the pair's "shared interest in helping children and, in particular, helping girls in school", according to the White House.

"Thank you for having me here and thank you for a handsome warm welcome", Trump told her hosts, adding that she wanted to be in Malawi to see the success of American programs here.

The President of Ghana (where Melania will also stop on the trip), Nana Akufo-Addo, criticised the reported comments at the time, calling them "extremely unfortunate".

Another sign said "69 Days Past the Deadline to Reunite Families.' That was a reference to the president's 'zero tolerance" immigration policy that led to the separation of thousands of children from their families as they tried to illegally cross from Mexico into the U.S. Many children remain separated from their families.

Melania landed at Jomo Kenyatta worldwide airport at around 9pm on her first visit to Kenya and was received by first lady margaret kenyatta.

"I think she's kind and nice".
