Clay Matthews on latest roughing call: National Football League is 'getting soft'

For the second consecutive week, Clay Matthews was called for a controversial roughing the passer penalty.

Matthews, though, said that play made it hard to define a "good hit" when compared to his penalty. "What he's dealt with as far as the amount of change just speaks volumes about him as a football player and a person".

"I think we enjoy the protection below the knee and above the shoulders, but I don't know many quarterbacks who want those calls", he said. "You know obviously when you tackle the guy from the front you're going to land on him", Matthews shared in a post-game interview with Josina Anderson.

"We haven't changed anything with the way we're coaching our players", McCarthy said. The tailback was suspended by the NFL for the first two games for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The latest happened Sunday, Sept. 23 in the Packers' loss to the Washington Redskins.

The Packers will finally have all three backs of their rotation available this Sunday as Aaron Jones is done serving his two-game suspension.

Jones, who was also bothered by a hamstring injury in the preseason, ran for 448 yards and four touchdowns on 81 carries previous year.

Washington fell 21-9 to the Colts in Week 2 after a dominant Week 1 win over the Cardinals. The first half was the offense's time to shine. McCarthy did not expect CB Kevin King (groin) to play this week, though he did not think it would be a long-term issue. Peterson was a major factor in Week 1 with 96 yards, but the Colts held him to 20 yards on 11 carries last week. They cleaned up their miscues in the second half and played well after intermission, but it was too little too late. Kentrell Brice lost the ball in the air on the Redskins first touchdown, and Joshua Jackson was beaten deep on a pass to tight end Vernon Davis.

In addition to the defense struggling, wide receiver Randall Cobb had an extremely rough day as well. In two games, he is averaging just 3.1 yards per carry and has a long of just 17 yards. But it's even more clear that it won't be for some time. According to ESPN, Rodgers threw for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns with about a 62% competition rate.

START: Keelan Cole, WR, Jaguars: Leonard Fournette should return to the lineup, but it shouldn't keep Cole from having a solid encore performance after last week's seven-catch, 116-yard outing against the Patriots that included his first touchdown of the season.

It has been presumed that Aaron Rodgers' knee injury would only get better from here on out. Sunday, his targets just could not finish the job for him.

The Lombardi Ave staff predictions for today's game, three keys to the game, and more, is all in the Titletown Report today. LB Blake Martinez led team with nine tackles last week.

There are sure to be more questions and more debate around the National Football League about what constitutes a penalty on such plays.
