Joker Director Todd Phillips shares first glimpse of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur

Phillips is known for helming The Hangover comedy trilogy.

Back in July,That Hashtag Show reported that Arthur Fleck will be the Joker's name before he becomes Batman's greatest nemesis. The Joker has, of course, used many aliases over the years, but most have always involved a "J" somewhere (Jack Napier, Jack White etc.), so it's something of a departure for this incarnation to omit the letter entirely.

Robert De Niro (The Godfather Part II), Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), and Marc Maron (Glow) have co-starring roles in the movie, which is scheduled to hit the silver screen on October 4, 2019. The actor and Phillips have revealed that the film is not going to be a normal superhero movie, stating that it's going to be a relatively low-budget character study instead, which sounds pretty intriguing.

In the leaked videos from set, we can see Arthur having an animated discussion with a large man dressed up like a clown.

"Arthur", Phillips captioned the image of Phoenix, who stares at the camera - unsmiling and without the titular villain's signature clown makeup.

If you want more looks at Pheonix's Joker, some set photos have surfaced of Phoenix in this get-up shooting some scenes with a more traditional clown.

Some DC fans may be pretty underwhelmed by the first look at Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker film. That's fitting, because Scorsese is also co-producing the Joker movie. According to Phillips' post, Phoenix's character will be called Arthur. Gone is the make up and dyed green hair, and instead, Phoenix looks dishevelled in drab clothing. The story takes place in the '80s, outside of the DC Extended Universe series of films.
