Millions in USA prepare for potentially catastrophic Florence

"Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday", the NHC said in a bulletin.

The hurricane is expected to reach the coast of North Carolina Thursday night into Friday morning. Now is the time to get prepared to make sure your family is safe.

"Hurricane #Florence this morning as seen from @Space_Station", Arnold tweeted on Monday.

More than a million people are expected to flee low-lying areas, as SC and Virginia ordered mandatory evacuations of coastal areas starting on Tuesday.

Henry McMaster (R) on Monday ordered a mandatory evacuation of the state's coastline ahead of Hurricane Florence's expected arrival on Thursday.

Florence was packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, with higher gusts, the hurricane center said in its 8 a.m. ET update.

Off the state's coast, large sea swells and risky rip currents were already apparent over the weekend, foreshadowing the storm's arrival.

Since hurricane-force winds are likely to make their way to the coast by Wednesday, residents need to be preparing now, he added, as it will soon be far too unsafe to go outside.

Half a dozen nuclear power plants, pits holding coal-ash and numerous hog farms are on the storm's path.

Airlines, including American and Southwest, have started letting passengers change travel plans that take them into the hurricane's possible path.

Inland flooding will be exacerbated by the wet summer seen across several eastern U.S. states.

"It's not just the coast", Graham said.

With little wind to pull the storm apart, Florence's hurricane wind field is expected to expand over coming days, increasing its storm surge and inland wind threats.

The "major" hurricane was about 845 kilometres south-southeast of Bermuda on Monday and moving toward land at approximately 20 km/h, according to an advisory from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The storm will also be in a position where it can continue to collect more moisture from the Atlantic - and that's an alarming combination.

"Isaac is a small hurricane and uncertainty in the forecast is greater than normal", the National Hurricane Center reported Monday at 11 a.m.

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner will hold a press conference Tuesday at noon at the sheriff's office.

Some forecasts call for Florence to stall out after it strikes the coast.

North Carolina should brace for three dangers from Florence, Cooper said: coastal ocean surges, strong winds and flooding.

Perhaps surprisingly, prior to Hurricane Harvey's arrival last year, the USA mainland went a record 12 years without a major hurricane making landfall.

"There will be prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event as this gets inland", said Feltgen.

HURRICANE Florence could intensify yet again with the monster storm on the brink of a Category 5, prompting evacuations of more than one million people in the U.S. to higher ground.

"I think this is very Harvey-esque", said University of Miami hurricane expert Brian McNoldy.
