Tesla Stock Is Tanking After Elon Musk Lost a Top Executive

Even before the announcement of Morton's departure, the company's shares were already seeing a slight decline in Friday's pre-market trading as reports of Elon Musk's behavior in a podcast with comedian Joe Rogan emerged.

Musk covered topics in the interview ranging Tesla and SpaceX to what he perceives are the dangers of artificial intelligence.

"Is that a cigar?" asked Mr Musk when his host first proffered the joint.

"I don't think you would necessarily want to be me - you wouldn't like it that much", Musk told Rogan during the live-streamed podcast.

"I'm not a regular smoker of weed", Musk told Rogan. "You probably can't because of stockholders, right?" Investors who have bet that Tesla's stock price will fall, or "short sellers", also have filed a lawsuit against Tesla and Musk alleging that the take-private proposal was a ruse aimed at lowering the value of their holdings.

The conversation shifted still darker as Musk talked about a "never-ending explosion" of ideas that constantly runs through his brain. The newspaper said two people familiar with the electric-car maker's board expressed concern about his workload and use of the prescription sleeping drug Ambien.

Morton left Seagate Technology(STX) - where, according to company filings, he made some $5 million in 2017 salary and other compensation - to join Tesla.

Musk replied, "I mean it's legal, right?" before taking a drag.

Of 50 United States sates, recreational cannabis remains illegal in 41 - but it was legalised in California, where the podcast was filmed, in January.

"It's like a cup of coffee in reverse", he added.

Musk said he is less anxious about AI than he had been, mostly due to "taking a more fatalistic attitude".

Musk later brightened and said, "This may sound corny, but love is the answer".

While it is, again, another chapter in the "wacky adventures" of Elon Musk, I suspect that this is going to be another faux pas in the coming days.

"This is insane", Musk said.

"If we were forever constrained to Earth, that would not be a good future".

He said: "I think the future in where we are a space-faring civilisation out there among the stars, that is very exciting". "Do people get upset at you if you do certain things?"
