Arizona governor names former Sen. Jon Kyl as McCain replacement

Ducey's appointment comes the same day as confirmation hearings begin for Judge Brett Kavanaugh, whom Kyl is shepherding through the U.S. Supreme Court confirmation process.

McCain died on August 25 after being diagnosed a year ago with brain cancer. The seat will come up again for a six-year term in 2022. "I consider it a great privilege to have served with John and I will miss him as a friend and as a strong force for America in the world", Kyl said at the memorial service for McCain in Phoenix.

Kyl represented Arizona in the Senate from 1995 to 2013. Flake wrote. "There is no one more qualified and Arizona is well served".

Separately, GOP senators decided to make Sen.

Jon Kyl was sworn in as a replacement for Senator John McCain today by VP Mike Pence.

Before the appointment, Kyl served as Kavanaugh's Senate guide, accompanying him on courtesy visits to Capitol Hill. The governor's spokesperson said last week that Ducey would wait until the services for McCain had concluded to select someone to replace the Arizona senator. The governor confirmed the news in a tweet Tuesday morning as well, saying "I am deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years". Kyl retired from Congress in January 2013 as the second-highest ranking Republican senator.

Kyl will likely also vote on bills containing tens of billions of dollars for Defense Department programs after he represented defense giant Northrop Grumman.

Veteran Republican consultant and former McCain aide Doug Cole called Kyl a good, safe pick. "Honors his legacy while putting some major horsepower for Arizona in the seat, at least for now", he said.

An attorney, Kyl speaks in a formal, reserved manner that is a sharp contrast to US President Trump, and he belongs to an older, less populist vanguard of the GOP.

Ducey says he received a lot of advice about naming McCain's successor, but kept coming back to one name: Jon Kyl.

Former Senator Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., answers a question after Gov. Doug Ducey, R-Ariz., announced the appointment of Kyl to fill Sen.

In a prepared statement, the governor's office said Kyl's "expertise on water and natural resource issues will be very beneficial to our state as we face new challenges in those areas", noting that Arizona State University's Kyl Center for Water Policy is named for him.

She's now locked in a tough campaign against Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema for the Senate seat Flake is vacating. The victor of that special election will fill the remaining two years of McCain's term.

McCain served more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate prior to his death. Barry Goldwater after McCain had served in the House of Representatives.

Ducey insisted that his choice was not a political calculation. He's up for re-election this November against Democratic challenger David Garcia.
