Deputies returned fire, the sheriff said.

As the crowd panicked and fled, nearby deputies shot the man, leaving him lying on the sidewalk.

The concert, for which tickets were sold out, was scheduled to follow a full slate of horse races at the track, the station reported.

Within minutes there was a heavy police presence as San Diego County deputies streamed into the track and a helicopter was seen overhead.

When deputies responded to the scene just before 7 p.m., Elizarraras allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into the air in a crowded area. Just half an hour after the shooting, and with the day's racing finished, the racecourse tweeted that the gangsta rap gig would go ahead as planned.

His condition was not immediately available.

There were 18,000 people on hand for the Summer Concert Series at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. TVG documented the shooting while calling a race with a broadcaster repeatedly saying: "There is gunfire at the track".

The shooting at the Del Mar racetrack took place as a concert by the rapper Ice Cube was scheduled to start soon.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club said in a statement that under its special events protocol, substantial law enforcement and private security were on site during the event.

Del Mar Racetrack, where the Ice Cube concert is being held tweeted: "The situation has been contained. We will continue to fully cooperate with the Sherriff's Department in their investigation and will refer all questions concerning the incident to them", the statement continued.
