DeSantis says Floridians can't 'monkey this up' by electing black as governor

"Not only did Congressman Ron DeSantis easily win the Republican Primary, but his opponent in November is his biggest dream ... a failed Socialist Mayor named Andrew Gillum who has allowed crime & many other problems to flourish in his city".

The Associated Press called the races for Gillum and DeSantis by approximately 9:15 p.m., Eastern time.

DeSantis, who has represented Florida's 6th district in Congress since being elected in 2012, has frequently defended Trump on Fox News and in an advertisement in July that "teaches" his young children about the president.

"I wish he hadn't put his thumb on the scale of Florida's campaigns", he said. He said it was the only reason he voted for DeSantis.

Just hours after a big win to become the GOP nominee for Florida governor, Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis went on Fox News Wednesday morning to say the last thing Floridians should do is "monkey this up" by electing his African-American progressive opponent, Andrew Gillum. He continued, "That is not going to work, that's not going to be good for Florida".

DeSantis came out fighting after his victory, criticising Gillum as "way, way, way too liberal for the state of Florida".

Unfortunately for the president, Gillum had time and quickly responded to the president's attack posting: "What our state and country needs is decency, hope, and leadership".

He was the only leading Democrat in his primary to endorse "Medicare-for-all" single-payer health care, a top progressive agenda item and the policy most famously championed by Vermont's independent Sen.

Trump's tweet followed closely on the heels of a national television appearance by Gillum, in which he said he does not fear Trump's expected heavy involvement in the general election - and called for Trump's impeachment.

DeSantis based almost his entire campaign around the president. Incoming Florida House Minority Leader Kionne McGhee, who is black, said DeSantis had invoked "racism and division as his platform".

"Tonight as the mayor of Florida's capital city, I humbly accept the Democratic nomination", Gillum said to watch-party attendees last night as they chanted "Bring it home!"

"Shame on you Ron DeSantis", McGhee, a south Dade Democrat and former prosecutor, said in a statement.

Throughout her campaign trail and debates with other candidates, Graham has focused on cleaning up Florida's environment, specifically its dirty waterways, improving schools, abortion rights and banning the sale of military-style assault weapons.

Stephen Lawson, a DeSantis spokesman, later said that any characterizations of racism were unwarranted.

When Graham conceded late Tuesday night, she promised Gillum that she would do all she could to help his campaign and help him win November's gubernatorial race.

While Gillum-who is now the mayor of Tallahassee-lacked the institutional backing and enormous personal wealth of his Democratic opponents, he overcame this cash deficit with a massive surge in voter turnout, which was attributed to his unwavering embrace of popular policies like Medicare for All and raising the minimum wage.

The election of either Abrams or Gillum would make history for Democrats, as there has never been a black Governor in Georgia or Florida.

"The same part of this country that was built by people of color may soon be led by people of color", he told The Washington Post in a recent interview.
