Redskins Rookie Derrius Guice Out For Season With Torn ACL

Selected in the second round of this year's draft, former LSU standout Guice went down awkwardly as he was tackled from behind on an impressive 34-yard scamper negated by a holding penalty. He has made a quick first impression on his Redskins teammates, including quarterback Colt McCoy, who said Guice has been "fun to watch" and is a "great player".

We here also wish Guice, who was having a remarkable training camp, a fast recovery. He was set to be part of a reworked offense after the Redskins traded for quarterback Alex Smith and signed wide receiver Paul Richardson. Quarterbacks that are not protected or given time to operate inside the pocket usually suffer numerous injuries during the grind of an National Football League season.

UPDATE: The Redskins confirmed Guice tore his ACL.

Still, Guice's injury continues the streak of bad luck for the organization. He played sparingly a year ago, and likely won't see his role increase that much as a result of Guice's injury. Washington had 23 players on injured reserve. Guice's injury likely puts an even greater emphasis on Washington's passing game, especially considering the creative ways in which Gruden can try to replicate the run game with passes to Thompson, Jamison Crowder and Jordan Reed.

Daron Payne, the team's 2018 first round pick, is nursing a high-ankle sprain, which caused him to be out 2-3 weeks.

The team also announced that tight end Manasseh Garner will miss the season with an ACL injury sustained in Thursday night's game.
