Baker Mayfield’s First NFL Preseason Game Is Over

With the first preseason contest behind us, what can Browns fans come away with for this game?

It might only be the preseason, but one game in, Baker Mayfield showed why the Cleveland Browns made him the No. 1 overall pick in this year's National Football League draft. The Browns starting QB Tyrod Taylor completed all of his five passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.

4 - The Browns gave up 4 rushing yards to Barkley after his opening run, proving that they could once again be of the league's premier run defenses this season. And he'll do it against a Giants team that's got a new coach in Pat Shurmur, a familiar leader in Eli Manning and a rousing crew of weapons headlined by Barkley, who'll get his first opportunity to own the Giants' backfield in East Rutherford. In two drives, Taylor went 5-of-5 for 99 yards, including a 36-yard TD down the seam to TE David Njoku (more on him shortly), for a ideal passer rating (158.3).

Mayfield was up next and, following a three-and-out, settled in on his second series, finding Rashard Higgins with a pretty back-shoulder throw on the sideline for a 26-yard gain.

Callaway, the Browns' fourth-round pick, played despite being cited for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license. Spencer Drago was called for holding, though, setting up third-and-18. The drive included conversions on third and long and fourth and two. He hauled in a quick slant from Mayfield that he took 54 yards to the end zone to extend the Browns' lead in the second half.

"If you're not going to work hard, then you're not doing it right", Mayfield said.

His line ended up at 11-of-20 for 212 yards and two scores.

It's only one preseason game, but there were plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
