NASA names crews and dates for first US commercial missions

NASA has chosen the "Commercial Crew Nine": the first humans who will go to space on rockets produced by private spaceflight companies.

The three pioneers will help restore American access to space from US soil, a capability that ended when the shuttle was retired seven years ago. "This accomplished group of American astronauts, flying on new spacecraft developed by our commercial partners Boeing and SpaceX, will launch a new era of human spaceflight", Mr. Bridenstine said. The selected astronauts, pictured above from left to right, are Sunita Williams, Josh Cassada, Eric Boe, Nicole Mann, Christopher Ferguson, Douglas Hurley, Robert Behnken, Michael Hopkins, and Victor Glover.

An unmanned Boeing flight test is scheduled for later this year, with the first crew on board in mid-2019, NASA said. The delays could even result in a gap in US access to the space station, because NASA has contracted for seats on Soyuz only through November 2019, the report found. NPR reports that some critics think the SLS is too expensive compared to industry developments like SpaceX's Falcon Heavy. One requirement is for respective companies to pass both uncrewed and crewed flight tests.

More astronaut crew members will be assigned to flight missions in the future, and both mission crews expressed the importance of adding them as soon as possible in order to reduce training challenges for both the crew and training teams. He began his career at NASA in 2000 and piloted two space shuttle missions, one on Endeavor in 2009 and the final shuttle mission on Atlantis in 2011.

The UAE is also sending its first Emirati astronaut to the ISS using the Soyuz MS-12 mission in April, 2019.

. It will mark Mann's first trip to space. Since then, every nation on Earth has relied on Russian Federation to get to the International Space Station.

"The first flight is something you dream about as a test pilot", said Hurley, who flew on the last shuttle mission.

For SpaceX's first flight to the ISS, the NASA crew will be Victor Glover on his first space flight and Mike Hopkins, who spent 166 days in space as part of Expedition 37/38.

Boeing's Starliner will soar on United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rockets.

The crew for Boeing's Crew Flight Test and SpaceX's Demo-2 flights will each include at least a flight commander and pilot aboard to test out the systems.

Both Boeing and SpaceX are also working with Bigelow Aerospace, a Las Vegas company that intends to launch private space stations into orbit, to be leased to nations or companies.

NASA's continuous presence on the space station for nearly 18 years has enabled technology demonstrations and research in biology and biotechnology, Earth and space science, human health, physical sciences.

The contracts for travel to the International Space Station were awarded in 2014. Her first was a space shuttle mission that launched in 2007, and the second was a Soyuz-launched mission in 2012. By naming crews, NASA is signaling its belief that these astronauts will fly sometime soon.
