Russian Federation names Steven Seagal special envoy to US

Russian President Vladimir Putin shakes hands with US actor Steven Seagal after presenting a Russian passport to him during a meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow on November 25, 2016.

The announcement comes with Russia-U.S. ties at a low ebb, over long-standing conflicts in Syria and Ukraine and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which Moscow rejects.

In an unconventional pick, action star Steven Seagal has been named as Russia's special representative to the U.S.

The foreign Ministry stressed that we are talking about the socio-political positions, not involving monetary compensation.

"I hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world".

Reacting to the appointment, Seagal said he was "deeply humbled and honoured".

I take this honour very seriously indeed and I once again thank you for your friendship, strength and support.

Seagal's unpaid position would "facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges". He attended Putin's recent swearing-in ceremony in May. "In global practice it is possible to draw Parallels with the functions of the goodwill ambassadors of the United Nations", - said the press service of the foreign Ministry in its statement. But Seagal has faced some criticism for his bromance with the controversial Russian leader: He has praised Putin's annexation of Crimea, for example, and last year, Kiev banned him from entering Ukraine for five years, claiming he has "committed socially unsafe actions" that could threaten their security.

He has previously hung out with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fellow martial arts fan.

Russian Federation isn't the only country offering overtures to Seagal.

In the interview, Seagal also praised Putin as "a great world leader" and a "brilliant tactician".
