Trump Jr.: Meeting was a 'bait and switch'

'Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower, ' Trump wrote in a Sunday tweet.

Trump calling the meeting "totally legal" and "done all the time" in politics'.

"I don't know the answer to that". The meeting between Mr Trump Jr and Ms Natalia Veselnitskaya is now the subject of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

Ingraham was questioning Trump Jr on the contradictory reports regarding his controversial Trump Tower meeting when the line dropped out.

Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has claimed that the president knew about, and approved of, that meeting, according to multiple news reports.

"The question is what law, statute or rule or regulation has been violated, and nobody has pointed to one", said Jay Sekulow, one of Trump's attorneys, on ABC's "This Week".

He reiterated that he had no prior knowledge of the 20-minute meeting when it happened, adding that "it went nowhere".

The Trump team maintains that the meeting failed to yield compromising information on Clinton, Trump's Democratic opponent.

Mirengoff explained that the Times is confusing the goal of the meeting - for Trump, getting the information about Clinton - with the focus of the meeting - "what the participants actually talked about". Is Mueller interested in the meeting more because of the substance of it or more because of what Trump's circle has said about it at different times? Citing thousands of documents supplied by the White House and interviews of Trump aides, they said Mueller already's knows Trump's positions on the issues at hand. Federal campaign finance law makes it illegal for a political campaign to accept a "thing of value" from foreign nationals, and it's possible that opposition research - though not in and of itself illegal - could be considered in that category for these purposes. This was later retracted after details emerged about why Junior had agreed to meet with the Russians. It was later described in the offer as, quote, "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

The first is that Trump appears to have broken some new ground here when it comes to admitting the true goal of the Trump Tower meeting with a Kremlin-aligned lawyer - and even further contradicted the initial statement he helped draft about it. However, Trump argued collusion is totally legal.

Trump's lawyers and the White House have given conflicting accounts about whether Trump was involved in crafting Donald Jr.'s response to a New York Times article last summer revealing the Trump Tower meeting with the adoptions rationale.

"I had bad information at that time", the lawyer said. Trump has publicly expressed a desire to be interviewed, but his lawyers have repeatedly objected to the investigators' proposals. Dowd subsequently resigned from the Trump team.

His comments were part of a broader Twitter rant Sunday, which also included a tweet falsely claiming the press "purposely cause great division & distrust".

It's unclear whether Trump's latest admission will affect Mueller's probe in any way.

So today's breathless headlines are, as the Powerline blog's Paul Mirengoff called them, "fake news".
