Tamil Veteran Politician Karunanidhi Passed Away

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party cadres react after Kauvery Hospital released a bulletin on party president M Karunanidhi's health in the evening, in Chennai, on Monday.

His death marked the end of an era in politics in the key southern Indian state. In 2014, his party contests the election alone and loses.

Admitted in hospital since July 28, Karunanidhi's blood pressure has been on a fluctuating mode and he continues to be hospitalised for his age-related ailments. Kanimozhi who Karunanidhi declared as his literary heir is a second term Rajya Sabha MP and DMK's women wing secretary. He then founded Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram which was the first student movement of the Dravidian movement.

Mr Karunanidhi was born in 1924. He has held various positions in the party and government during his long career in the Tamil Nadu political arena.

A high school dropout, Mr Karunanidhi got involved in social and political work at an early age.

When C.N. Annadurai broke away from Periyar's Dravida Kazhagam to start the DMK in 1949, Karunanidhi joined him.

Co-convener of Swadeshi Jagran Manch and RSS ideologue in Tamil Nadu, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, told News18 that DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi should not be buried at Marina Beach.

When Mr Annadurai died in 1969, Mr Karunanidhi, then in his 40s, took over leadership of the DMK.

In 1974, about 14 years before the Union government's Sarkaria Commission studied Centre-state relations, the DMK government under Karunanidhi passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on state autonomy based on the recommendations of the Rajamannar Committee.

The Tamil word can be translated into "scholar of arts". Parasakthi, a successful play written by Pavalar Balasundaram, was penned for the screen by Karunanidhi in 1952. Karunanidhi is considered as the leader who has always been concerned about his party and its people.

He never lost an election to an MLA seat.
