WGC Bridgestone Purse: How Much Does the Winner Make?

The world's top players make the trip to the four WGC tournaments each year with a big payout on the line and a good-sized check just for showing up.

Thomas will go down as the last victor of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

I holed a couple really nice putts for par in the middle of the back nine, so happy with that.

McIlroy made up three shots in the final round in 2014 when he rallied to beat Sergio Garcia at Firestone.

Thomas, one over through the first five holes after a birdie and two bogeys, produced five birdies in a nine-hole span to separate himself from a star-studded chasing pack.

The course started to get a little firmer.

The Bridgestone Invitational field includes the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Ranking, along with members of the Presidents Cup teams and the winners of selected tournaments on the PGA Tour and other worldwide tours.

Woods, an eight-times victor at Firestone, electrified the gallery with three early birdies but in the end managed only a middling 68 on a course that was there for the taking, with soft greens allowing players to fire aggressively at the pins.

"The first 10 holes were pretty good", said Johnson.

Thomas began the final round with a three-shot lead over McIlroy and Ian Poulter, and his goal was to minimize his mistakes while forcing the other players to catch him.

Thomas could not have asked for a better week.

"I'm really putting well, just didn't quite hit the putts hard enough today", Woods said.

Firestone has held tour events since the Rubber City Open in 1954.

The trio made the most of ideal morning scoring conditions, finishing the second round on 11-under 129, two strokes in front of American Kyle Stanley, who carded a 68 and Australian Jason Day, who produced a four-under 66 in the afternoon. In many respects, it was the precursor to the World Golf Championships by bringing in winners from around the world.

Straka earned $121,500 to jump from 130th to 29th on the money list with $145,000, with two events left to get into the top 25 and earn a PGA Tour card. Stanley closed with a 68. The result was a 6-under 64 for the 34-year-old American, who vaulted into a tie for third place with Thorbjorn Olesen at 10 under.

Sweeter than capturing his first World Golf Championship was the sight behind the 18th green Sunday.

McIlroy won at Bay Hill in March and has three runner-up finishes, and he had said Saturday afternoon he was exhausted of finishing second.

Thomas won for the ninth time in his career and moves to No. 2 in the world, with a shot to regain the No. 1 ranking next week.

"I wish it was here every year now, obviously", Thomas said.

Pornanong, also seeking her first major and LPGA title, double-bogeyed No. 17 to leave Hall with a three-shot lead down the last.
