Barcelona strike £36.5m deal for Malcom after Roma U-turn

Malcom had been linked with Everton and Inter Milan but Roma announced yesterday they had agreed a deal with Bordeaux worth 40m euros for the Brazilian.

Malcom agreed a five-year deal to move to the Camp Nou, with a release clause expected to be fixed at €400m.

Barcelona confirmed a deal to sign Malcom from Bordeaux on Tuesday, dramatically hijacking the Brazilian forward's move to Roma at the 11th hour.

However, Spanish champions Barcelona swooped in with a better offer before he had boarded a plane for Italy.

Malcom featured 36 times last season across all competitions, scoring 12 goals and registering seven assists.

Malcom had been a reported target for several European clubs, including Premier League sides Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, but English clubs may have been put off from making a bid as he needed a United Kingdom work permit to play in the Premier League. The player's agent, Fernando Garcia, told Real Sport it was the decision of the French club and not the player that resulted in the late switch: "We had an agreement with Rome, then Bordeaux blocked us".

"Aside from his speed, he also has great technical ability and links up well with his team-mates, one of the main aspects of Barca's football".

The La Liga champions have already secured two major signings in Arthur from Gremio and Sevilla's Clement Lenglet, and Malcom becomes the third.
