Raptors, Spurs close to deal around Kawhi Leonard, DeMar DeRozan

The Toronto Raptors reportedly have been one of the teams making calls to the Spurs regarding Leonard, and ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Tuesday on TSN's "SportsCentre" that the Raptors had made a "compelling offer" for Leonard, per Bleacher Report.

Despite vehemently pushing for his exit out of San Antonio, Leonard's discontent with being shipped to Canada is somewhat understandable given his demand to play for a big market - the Los Angeles Lakers in particular. And with the Nets, Bulls and Hawks spending their cap space, it makes it harder to assemble a multi-team trade.

Talks between the Spurs and Raptors have picked up over the last few days according to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports.

The report indicates that the Blazers' trade package did not include either of their star guards, Damian Lillard or CJ McCollum.

Kawhi Leonard has no desire to play in Toronto, league source tells ESPN. The Celtics and Sixers have offered pick-heavy packages that haven't moved the Spurs, league sources said.

If the deal is reached the Raptors would be getting the services of one of the best two-way players in the game when healthy.

At this time it is unclear if other players are involved in the trade.

As for DeRozan, the 28-year-old has already embedded roots with the Canadian franchise that drafted him, helping steer the Raptors into relevancy in the post-Vince Carter (or Chris Bosh) era, earning All-Star honors and several playoff trips in his nine seasons.

Leonard, a two-time All-Star and 2014 NBA Finals MVP, has a player option after the 2018-19 season.

Leonard has been clear that he plans to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency next summer, so Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri is taking a significant risk in pursuing the trade.

We could potentially see a trade where both players are not happy with the outcome but with the two teams certainly keen to get it done, a blockbuster deal looks imminent.
