Croatia should command more respect, says Dejan Lovren

Speaking to BeIN SPORTS, he said: "I heard people saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

Matip went on to praise Lovren's performances during the competition, while also expressing his sympathy for Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose England side were eliminated by Croatia in the last four.

Speaking after Liverpool's goalless draw with Bury in a preseason friendly on Saturday, Klopp said: "It would be better if somebody else would say that and not Dejan, but actually he's right".

Croatia have relied on mental strength to defy limited resources and become the smallest nation in 68 years to reach a World Cup final, said defender Dejan Lovren.

Lovren is expected to start in Croatia's World Cup final meeting with France in Moscow on Sunday.

Several Croatian players said they have felt disrespected during their World Cup run and that the media haven't given them enough credit.

Croatia seemed on the ropes when Kieran Trippier gave England an early lead, but they hit back in the second half through Ivan Perisic before grabbing a victor in extra-time through Mario Mandzukic.

The former Southampton and Lyon defender will become only the second player to feature in both a Champions League final and a World Cup final in one season, after Thierry Henry became the first in 2006 for Arsenal and France respectively.

Lovren has been considered by some as error-prone, but Klopp feels this assessment has been blown out of proportion. In the middle of the park Rakitic and Modric are offensive, so somebody must fix all that and he is a big part of it.

"I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League". I did not see two better centre-halves in the Champions League (final) - only that they were more ruthless.

And he reserved a special word for team-mate Luka Modric: 'He is, not one of, the best midfield player in the world. "Next time I will say it!" Now with my national team we are in the final. But he has another chance at lifting a silverware with Croatia on Sunday.
