IDF attacks Syrian military posts in retaliation for drone infiltration
According to state-run SANA, "Syrian air forces intercepted an Israeli aggression and downed a number of missiles which were targeting T-4 airport in Homs".
Earlier on Wednesday, Netanyahu said Israel shot down a Syrian drone that entered its airspace.
Israel attacked Syrian army positions on Thursday near the Golan Heights frontier, where pro-government forces fighting insurgents in the south of the country have marched towards the border. In 1981, the Knesset (the Israeli parliament) adopted the law "On the Golan Heights", which unilaterally proclaimed Israel's sovereignty over this territory.
Israel has been on high alert as Syrian regime forces advance on the opposition and rebels in the vicinity of the Golan, which Israel took from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.
Since mid-June, the Syrian army has conducted an operation in the south-west of the republic near the border with Israel against the terror group Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia) and armed groups supporting it.
"The aircraft of the Israeli enemy fired several missiles in the direction of some army positions", Syrian state media cited the military source as saying on Wednesday.
In the ensuing years, Israel has rarely commented on targeted strikes against Iranian convoys attempting to deliver weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon or airstrikes against Iranian military bases in Syria. Israel worries Assad could let his Iranian allies entrench near its lines or that Syrian forces may defy a 1974 Golan demilitarization.
"We will discuss Syria, we will discuss Iran, we will discuss Israel's security needs", Netanyahu told reporters before departing.
But diplomats on both sides say Russian Federation has made clear that it would oppose any Israeli action endangering Assad's rule.
Watched by Israeli soldiers with night-vision equipment, one woman - carrying one child and holding the hand of another - stepped through a gate built into Israel's security fence in the occupied Golan Heights.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian Federation on Wednesday that Israel does not intend to threaten Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule and asked Moscow to work to remove Iranian forces from Syria, an Israeli official said.
