In the last 16, France play Saturday in Kazan against the second-placed team from Group D, and Denmark take on the Group D victor the next day in Nizhny Novgorod.

France has won Group C and will open the round 16 on Saturday afternoon in Kazan, playing the Group D runner-up. France have scored just three times in three games in Russian Federation, including a penalty and an own goal, and it was another disjointed display from one of the title favourites. That has left Denmark in an awkward situation where they must get a result against France to eliminate Australia and get a spot in the round of 16.

A game neither France nor Denmark needed to win produced the World Cup's first 0-0 draw amid boos and whistles from fans on Tuesday.

Griezmann set up Giroud, but a late offside flag spared the blushes of the striker - scorer of Les Bleus' last three goals against Denmark - after he blazed over the crossbar. "We played to get the result and we did it".

At this World Cup, he has played in a partnership with Simon Kjaer for the two games against Peru and Australia but this time found himself moved into central midfield. The first 0-0 of the 2018 tournament, though, had been on the cards from an early stage. The 33-year-old made his only save in the 54th minute, spilling Christian Eriksen's free-kick before pouncing on the loose ball.

The team lost rhythm inserting a different trio of attacking midfielders to support Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud. "I'm going to get better and I'm sure the level everyone expects, including myself, is going to come quickly", he told French TV channel TF1.

Nabil Fekir was introduced for Griezmann for the final 20 minutes, and the Lyon forward looked lively right away as he hammered a shot just the wrong side of the post.

"It has not ended up a very exciting match because the Danish team were satisfied with a draw as it meant they would qualify".

All four group D teams are still in contention: Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina but only Croatia and Nigeria can win the group. Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel clawed the shot wide and Ricci and VAR settled for the corner.
