Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal arrived Saturday in Russian Federation to begin final preparations for a World Cup campaign that pits them against arch-rivals Spain.

Even as speculations of Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid in the ongoing summer window are rife, it has now emerged that the Portuguese superstar is unlikely to find his next destination outside Europe.

Five-time Ballon d'Or victor Ronaldo fuelled talk of an exit from Real following their third consecutive Champions League triumph in Kiev against Liverpool.

The 33-year-old ended up staying at Real - leading them to a third straight Champions League title. "Salah is certainly one of them".

Portugal will get their World Cup campaign underway against Spain with Morocco and Iran next in line.

Ronaldo's game has changed again in the last two years, since he scored three and assisted three at Euro 2016, and this will surely be his final World Cup.

"I hope that I have the chance to play against Cristiano Ronaldo, we must be focused on cancelling him out", he told reporters.

"A defeat on the first day puts you in a bad way for the rest of the tournament so it's important to start well", he said.

The midfielder did not hide the Spanish team's desire to reach the match against Portugal and not settle for a draw against the team led by Cristiano.

The Argentine spoke to Mundo Deportivo and addressed a wide range of topics, including Neymar, players to watch at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and Zinedine Zidane's departure from Real Madrid.
