In releasing the report - the same week fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead by suicide - CDC officials noted that more than half of those who died by suicide - 54 percent - did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition.

Suicide rates in the United States have surged by 30 percent in almost all states since 1999, indicating how it has become a major problem in the country.

"Our data suggests suicide is more than a mental health issue", said Deborah M. Stone, lead author of that study.

"These findings are disturbing".

The report found that some of the leading causes of suicide included: relationship issues, substance abuse, job struggles, physical health, and past or upcoming moments of crisis. The highest rate of increase took place in North Dakota.

That, combined with state legislative support, federal grants through the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and relatively strict laws on gun ownership, have put CT in a relatively strong position to keep suicide deaths down, said Andrea Duarte of the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' prevention division.

If you are feeling one or more of thesymptoms or know someone who is, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text "TN" to 741-741. AFSP creates a culture that's smart about mental health through education and community programs, develops suicide prevention through research and advocacy, and provides support for those affected by suicide.

"Suicide in this country really is a problem that is impacted by so many factors". "We have to ask people who are at risk if they have a firearm, and while they're in recovery or treatment, recommend safe storage of that firearm", he said. The same is true for those with mental health conditions, but at a much lower percentage of 69 percent and 41 percent respectively. But it does not directly discuss limiting access to guns, the most common method used in suicide.

While the murder rate has fallen dramatically over the past four decades, suicide is on the rise, and the reasons are multiple. The cause of death was suicide.

"To be honest I didn't even know what suicide was when I was in middle school", said Monroe.

The association's president, Julie Cerel, added that suicide rates were disproportionate among middle-aged men. The alliance is working with more than 250 hospitals to ensure that someone brought in after a suicide attempt is connected to long-term mental-health care, Dr. Reed said.

The rates of suicide for all states and the District of Columbia were calculated using data from the National Vital Statistics System. "There are many different circumstances and factors that contribute to suicide". Research shows suicide rates are increasing in the United States.

"We think a key message is, there's not just one group; many are at risk", Schuchat said.
